Bariatric Gone Bad

This is a story of a client who decided to have Bariatric surgery to solve her weight problems. The surgery was NOT a success. Here’s the stats….

Weighed 160# after having first child.

Weight got up to 210 after having second child.

Weight continued to creep up to 240

I met her in 2009. Weight had gotten down to 225 after doing Weight Watchers

Trained one on one and got weight down to 207. Sept 2010 decided to have Bariatric Surgery ( I didn’t know what sabotage was going on).

4 months AFTER surgery(Jan 2011)….weight was UP to to 212#!…

Jan. 2012, weight was 208. IN TWO YEARS, WEIGHT HAD NOT CHANGE AFTER HAVING SURGERY! Weight only fluctuated only 8# from Jan 2011 to 2012.

Here’s her words……

“I couldn’t wrap my head around whats going on. I was in denial. I couldn’t stick with ANY plan. I didn’t like Paleo enough and I hated cooking. I had a highly emotionally stressful job even though I only worked 3 days a week. I diagnose people that have ALS (tell people they only have short while to live).

“I wouldn’t keep junk food in the house because I knew I would eat it. That wasn’t an issue. However, at work I would actively seek out the goodies. I knew that there was some kind of sweets in the office and I would go looking for them.”

“I was highly frustrated. The Dr. said I would lose weight simply due to the account of not being able to physically eat as many calories as normal…..THEY NEVER ASKED ME HOW MUCH I WAS EATING BEFORE, NOR DID THEY ASK WHAT I WAS EATING. After seeing my body composition, seeing my physical dimensions, and passing the heart function test, they determined I was a candidate to have the surgery.”

“The surgery never did any good! Im stuck with this thing in my body. Its noticeable and to get rid of it, I have to have another surgery. I COULD HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL WITH OUT THE SURGERY.It was never about the volume of food, it was about quality of food.”

Jan 2012 I finally decided and committed to eliminating sugar COMPLETELY for 3 months. I started journaling everything I ate and I stayed accountable to not miss a workout(was training one on one 3x a week). I basically was giving up a whole food group (sugar). In the past I would leave workouts and immediately drive to 7Eleven and make me a Dr.Pepper/Diet Coke hybrid.  (SABOTAGE)

It wasn’t till I completely eliminated it (sugar) out of my diet that I realized I had a problem. It was my crack. I didn’t smoke, drink, or have other habits, but this was a big one. It was like an addiction. It sounds silly but its true.”

(Lost 20# in 3 months after completely eliminating it and decided to keep it going)

“I read in a book that it was just as easy to make a good decision as well as a bad decision. These were the words I kept repeating to myself.”

“I feel there IS a need for bariatric surgery. Its for people who eat large quantities of food like multiple plates at the buffet. It’s also for people who have developed diseases like diabetes because of their weight. Neither one of those were my problem. I was just looking for a quick emotional fix.”

“There needs to be more questions asked by Doctors. People need more information on how food works in the body.”

In the last 12 months, her weight is 157 on 12/30/13 bringing her total weight loss of 83#! In her first 4 years I knew her she lost 18#. You’ll also notice in the chart the climbs in weight. You can still get heavier even though you cant eat as much. This year after sticking to her guns, she lost 51#! You can see the side trends for the first 4 years.

Knowledge and Information will never be enough. ACTION MUST BE TAKEN over and over and over again. Having a trainer or coach wont cut it. Knowing Paleo wont cut it. Only consistent and deliberate action will help you achieve your goals.
